Dear Students and Parents

In 2010 New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges Rugby League is implementing a new initiative as part of our State Selection Trials. An extra team, known as the President’s Team, will participate in our selection trials.

The President’s team will provide an additional opportunity for students who do not gain selection in their association/diocesan team to participate in our State Selection Trials.

This may include students who:
• do not participate and are not selected due to illness/injury
• perform poorly in their association/diocesan trials due to injury/fatigue from a heavy playing schedule
• miss selection due to the strength of their association
• enroll in a Catholic school after their association/diocese team has been selected.

There will be a President’s Team for both 15’s and 18’s years age groups. For the 15’s team players must be born in 1995 or 1996 and for the 18’s team players must be born in 1994, 1993 or 1992.

The coaching staff for each team is as follows:

18’s PRESIDENT’S TEAM COACH: MR TIM WHITE (Holy Cross College Ryde) Tel 9808 1033 Fax 9809 7207 Manager: Mr Leon Robinson (St Paul’s College Kempsey) Trainer: Mr Michael Fisher (St Mary’s Cathedral College Sydney)

15’s PRESIDENT’S TEAM COACH: MR LEE ADDISON (St Gregory’s College Campbelltown) Telephone 02 4629 4222 Fax 02 4628 1594 Manager: Mr Michael O’Beirne (La Salle College Bankstown)
Trainer: To be appointed

To be eligible for inclusion in either President’s Team students must:
1. Have participated in their association selection trial/s, or have been exempt from trialing by their Association Convenor, eg due to injury, and not been selected in their association team. (Please note that this is not a separate pathway and that entry to this team is only open to players who have not been selected in their association team. The exception to this is a student who has enrolled in a Catholic school after the selection trial/s.)

2. Complete and fax the attached nomination form before 3.00pm Friday 7th May to the relevant coach. Due to geographical and time constraints, the selection process will be subjective and by invitation from the selection panel.

Students from all Catholic high schools in NSW are eligible for selection and the selection of each President’s Team cannot take place until all associations have completed their selection process. Please refer to the attached Selection Policy for further information.

All students will be informed of the outcome of their nomination by Wednesday 12th May and the team will be placed on our website. Students who gain selection must agree to:
1. Pay the team levy of $100.00 to the Team Manager by Monday 17th May. The levy includes playing strip (jersey, shorts and socks), polo shirt, strapping, first aid etc and post game recovery (hydration/nutrition).

If payment is not received by Monday 17th May NSWCCC Rugby League may invite another student into the team to ensure a squad of twenty players attends the selection trials. Cheques to be made out to NSWCCC Rugby League and send to team managers school, att to their name..

2. Attend training on Thursday 20th May at 2.00pm at St Mary’s. (This is consistent with the preparation for Northern Country and Southern Country teams.)
3. Abide by the attached Code of Behaviour and ARL policies.
4. Accept a position in their association team if a position in that team becomes available prior to the commencement of the selection trials.

For any initial enquiries please contact the Team Coach.

COCHRANE CUP REPORT

RED BEND COLLEGE, FORBES v AQUINAS COLLEGE, MENAI

It was a big week last week for Red Bend College as the 14’s went down to a very well coached side from Aquinas College, Menai, (Steve Gough former Cronulla coach and assistant to John Lang at Cronulla and Penrith coached them, he is now deputy at Aquinas).

The Sydney boys had an enjoyable trip to the country and should be congratulated on the way they represented their school both on and off the field.

Red Bend went down fighting in the semi final of the under 14’s Cochrane Cup last Friday.

Supported on by the junior school, many parents and local spectators, they were unable to reproduce the victory of the Opens the day before.

In a very close game where the opposition, Aquinas College from Menai, were first to score, the College team led by Dave Cowhan had their chances.

With the score 12 - 6 at the break after a barn storming run and try by Parkes student Druss Afele.

The second half showed some great defence with neither side able to dominate. Menai score a late try in the corner to run out winners 16 - 6.

Once again the best for the College was front rower Dave Cowhan, followed by Bryce Park and Jarrod Tyack.

Coaches awards for the Opens on Thursday and 14’s on Friday went to Toby Evans (Parkes) who played half back in the Opens 14 - 12 win over St Edwards from Gosford and Dave Cowhan (Forbes) in the fourteens.

These awards kindly donated by St George-Illawarra (thanks to Brian Keegan)

Aquinas College's Player's player was Sharks Development player Josh Baldacchino, others worth a mention are skipper Jeremy Safi who is in the Bulldogs development squad and was converting goals from the sidelines.

Aquinas coach Steve Gough said, " the boys all played very well, the Red Bend people were great and really looked after as from the moment we arrived at the College."

Aquinas College now take on powerhouse St. Hohns Woodlawn in the Grand Final of the NSWCC Cochrane Cup.

The Grand Final is on at Leichhardt Oval next Wednesday the 16 Sept, kick off 11:00 am.

WESTERN FINALS OF THE CRL ‘ANDREW RYAN’ CUP

Red Bend Catholic College, Forbes had both the fifteens and Opens in the Andrew Ryan Cup finals hosted by the CRL in Dubbo last Thursday.

The College fifteens had 3 very hard and close games.

Winning their first against Bathurst High School 12-10, followed by a draw against James Sheahan and in the final game to determine who progressed through to the Southern Semi-Finals in Cootamundra, they were defeated by a strong South Dubbo team 20-12. Best for the College fifteens on the day were Jake O’Brien, Dave Cowhan, Wade Harris and Jake Goodwin.

Red Bend’s Opens played outstanding rugby league to convincingly win both their games.

In the first game they accounted for James Sheahan (Orange) 36-0, followed by another dominating display against Kelso High (Bathurst) also 36-0.

The Opens now progress through to the CRL Cup Semi Finals to be held in Cootamundra on July 30th, where they play Kiama High and either Hennessy College (Young) or Bega High in the second game.

The Open’s best performers were forwards Lou Goodwin, Jake Grace, Andrew Cowhan, Mitch Davis and in the backs Toby Evans and Ethan Williams.

A highlight for the players was meeting Andrew Ryan and him making the presentation to the winners with the Open’s receiving bags containing ‘Bulldogs’ gear.

Both teams would like to thank the CRL and Andrew Ryan (Bulldogs) for hosting the day and the many spectators for travelling to Dubbo.

COLLEGE THROUGH TO FINAL 8 COCHRANE CUP

The College Fourteens travelled to Wagga on Tuesday 7th July to participate in the Regional playoffs for the Cochrane Cup against Kildare Catholic College.

The Cochrane Cup is a State wide competition for Catholic Schools and Colleges and administered by the NSW RL Academy.

The College started well scoring the first try with Ben Thomson from Parkes crossing out wide. Kildare attacked the College line and were next to score from kick to level the scores at 4 all.

After some great work by the College forwards including Druss Afele the ball was shifted out wide with Dave Cowhan offloading to Jarred Tyack for winger Ben Maguire to score in the corner, this had the College in front 8-4 at halftime.

Kildare attacked after the break scoring next for 8 all.

The Red Bend team then controlled with great tries to Daniel Willis and Chris Judd and a conversion to Caleb Hewitt.

In a hard decision as all players played well points were given to front rower Dave Cowhan 3 points, 2 points to second rower Ben Thomson and 1 point each to 13 year old Chris Judd and forward Archie McMasters.

Thanks to the parents that travelled down to support the team, Robyne Cowhan for the photos and Kildare College for the BBQ after the game.

The Fourteens now move into the final 8 in the State and are due to play La Salle College, Bankstown (Jamal Idris’ school) early next term.

NSWCCC played 2 trials against the mighty WestsTigers teams at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday morning.

It turned out to be a great day for footy at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday morning when Wests Magpies & the Wests Tigers threw their junior rep's at the NSW CCC under 15's and under 18's.

It was a good hit out for both teams with plenty of good things coming from both games.

Some extra time together and the trial against the mighty Parramatta Eels Harold Matthew's & SG Ball champion sides these two CCC teams will improve out of sight in time for the ASSRL Championships coming pretty soon now.

The Eels trial is in a couple weeks and both teams will be tested by Parramatta, both their Matty's Cup & SG Ball sides had fantastic seasons with the Under 16's losing the Grand Final to a rampaging Bulldogs team at the height of their powers. aCTioN PHoTo'S

Oki Jubilee Stadium was a fitting venue for the St. George regional final of the Premier schoolboys rugby league comptition in Australia.

Christian Brother College Lewisham got it on with powerhouse Marist Brothers College Kogarah in this years final.

The Christian Brothers side got off to a good start attacking the the line only to be held out by pretty good Marist Bro's defence, after repeated sets the Christian Bro's were first to score when Matt Coffey crossed.

That was about all the joy for the boys from Lewisham, from then on the Marist boys took control of the game winning this Arrive alive Cup regional final 6 tries to 2.

Aaron Pollard was amoung the best for the Marist boys with his 2 tries and conversion while Daniel Abou-Sleiman was very handy for the Christian Brother's.
