Keebra Park war cry “BLUE WALL” a tradition spanning some 40 years and etched into the heart of every student to ever pull on the prestigious school jersey.
BLUE WALL ANNIVERSARY JERSEY

To the casual observer the small patch of blue painted wall in an unassuming corner of the Keebra Park Football gymnasium may seem to have been an oversight by the painting crew, with Maroon walls and program values displayed on every other surface, however those associated with Rugby League and school tradition know otherwise.

This patch of Blue is the foundation of the Keebra Park war cry 'BLUE WALL' a tradition spanning some 40 years and etched into the heart of every student to ever pull on the prestigious school jersey.

Many an attacking team has felt the brunt of the “WALL” and the sting of the tackle as seemingly wave after wave of defence rallies around it and it is no exaggeration to argue that this underpinning belief has seen Keebra Park players reach above and beyond their own capabilities and find that extra 5 percent that makes all the difference in a tight encounter.

It is also the underpinning steel that is an inbuilt part of the fabric of players of the calibre of Sam Moa, Isaac Liu, Agnatius Paasi and Vaha Pulu and the reason they have been able to resurrect seemingly spent careers and have made then a commodity highly sought by any intelligent recruitment manager.

The BLUE WALL is part of Benji, Rangi, Ben Teo, Greg Eastwood and Bodene Thompson and while many may have found an excuse to take it easy it is also an integral part of Robert Lui and Ben Murdoch as they ply their trade in England.

Ask any of the new breed, Kahu, Arrow, Martin, Felise, Heleta, Haas, Norman, Edwards, Rowe or the many more set to follow…..What drives them? And while they all have an aspect to their character that they were born with that sets them apart, The BLUE WALL is in them.

2017 will see the celebration of this BLUE WALL as a major design feature in the Junior Rugby League Jerseys and will continue to be a feature over the seasons ahead.

While from 2018 the Opens will retain a unique colour scheme incorporating a series of traditional references, the Juniors jersey will continue to evolve using the Wall as a motif in honour of what is a proud and identifiably “Keebra Park”.

Once again “Imitation” is a compliment of the highest order but is completely eclipsed by Innovation and as the great John Laws would add…..”Imitators come and go but there is only one BLUE WALL”

Keebra Park would like to wish all schools in this year’s competition good luck and a prosperous and injury free 2017.

WESTS TIGERS-BOUND CONNELLY LEMUELU KICKS GOLDEN-POINT FIELD GOAL TO TAKE KEEBRA PARK TO TITLE

Story & Photo By : Connor O’Brien, Gold Coast Bulletin

WITH a state championship on the line, up stepped star Keebra Park State High fullback Connelly Lemuelu.

The match, played yesterday at Pizzey Park, shaped as a David and Goliath battle with Coombabah rank outsiders to the giant Keebra line-up.

What ensued was a tense, dramatic, see-sawing GIO Schoolboys Cup final between two talented and desperate sides.

Across 60 minutes the lead changed five times, before a late penalty goal to Coombabah winger Callum Boomer sent the decider into golden point.

Off the back of an excellent carry by Payne Haas the ball was fired to Wests Tigers-bound Lemuelu, who calmly slotted a 35m field goal to send Keebra’s huge supporter base into raptures.

“It’s pretty good – overwhelming,” an emotional Lemuelu told the Bulletin.

“Most of the boys have been waiting a few years, me myself have been waiting for two years just to make the Queensland final let alone the Australian final.

“We just stuck to our structure, we didn’t panic at the end and lucky for me I ended up with that final field goal.”

His father Konelio was in tears, having flown across from New Zealand to watch the game.

“I think that’s probably my good luck charm,” Lemuelu said. “Dad’s going back to New Zealand (today), Mum’s turn next week in the Australian final.”

Keebra last won a state title in 2013, when they went on to claim their second national crown.

They will play Westfields Sports High in the national final in Sydney next week.

Keebra coach Glen Campbell said they’ll go in confident: “We’re not going down there to run second”.

Prior to his field goal heroics, Lemuelu had earlier helped his side edge ahead in the 55th minute, showing an outstanding sleight of hand in a scrum-based set piece to put centre Liam Pakau through for his second try untouched.

The result ended Coombabah’s fairytale run which included beating heavyweights Palm Beach Currumbin State High and Kirwan State High – last year’s national winners – in consecutive matches.

Only millimetres prevented them progressing further, with five-eighth Taine Tuapiki’s field goal attempt into the wind in the dying minutes of regular time scraping just under the cross bar.

Coombabah coach Scott Marlow had special praise for standout captain Rei Rei Marsh, who carried a fractured sternum, and said the side had paved the way for future success.

“It’s been very difficult being the new kids on the block with Palm Beach and Keebra here so it’s been a long time coming for Coombabah but these boys have really set a great legacy for the teams that come in the future,” he said.

Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell was among a high-profile crowd. Six Keebra players – Lemuelu, Pakau, Oscar Tui, Liam Hampson, Kelepi Lui and captain Tom Mikaele – will join the NRL club’s under-20s 2017 squad.

BLUE WALL

Full enjoyment of this literary masterpiece will rely on a modest knowledge of Civil war history and a smattering of good humour.

Many, many years ago in football history land (1970 ish) when competition for South Eastern dominance was as fierce as it is today, Keebra found themselves leading a tight game and digging deep in defence with wave after wave of marauding opponents attacking their line relentlessly.

Time after time they repelled these forays and as the mists rose on full time Keebra stood strong, together with their line intact and as the defeated opposition captain limped off with the help of those of his team mates still standing he was heard to mutter……”There stands Keebra like a BLUEWALL………….”

This was the origin of this moniker and while imitation is perhaps a form of flattery it is also lacking in respect for the blood, sweat and tears shed on not only on that day but by countless Keebra teams since.

Anyhow I digress……..

Congratulations boys after a hard fought win over Coombabah in the Qld final of the GIO National Schoolboy’s Cup. It was an epic encounter with a bit of everything……The bounce of the ball, the disallowed try, the last minute penalty and the ever so nearly field goal and I don’t think anyone went home not being thoroughly entertained by two teams who played hard and fair to the end.

With nothing to lose after a giant killing run into the final, Coombabah’s ad-hock style of desperation football confused the structure of the Keebra side who made a few uncharacteristic errors but managed to remain patient and calm under pressure with a maturity that eventually paid dividends. With the crowd in a frenzy and pressure building it was full back Connelly who calmly stepped up and slotted the golden point for a well deserved win in testing conditions.

The next test is Westfields Sports High in the National Final who disposed of The Hills Sports High in a similar Golden Point NSW National semi and while there are two teams in with a shout there is an only ever will be one BLUEWALL.
